Madison homeowners with a houseful of active young boys were quickly growing out of their outdated and over-worked laundry-mudroom space. After upgrading the appliances, painting, and replacing the flooring, the couple wanted a smart storage solution for the whole family. From coats and backpacks to sports gear and boots, too many items cluttered the area, making it difficult to manage the daily chaos. They decided to replace an outdated free-standing cubby unit with a custom-built unit with adjacent hooks to maximize an underutilized space.
The space measurements allowed for a 94" high x 32" wide x 12" deep unit with a 4" header trim, enabling a floor-to-ceiling installation that maximizes space and provides a built-in look, integrating as if it has always been part of the home. We sketched out the unit to illustrate the final design, complete with three lower shelves, six cubbies, and an upper shelf.
The homeowners envisioned two rows of hooks installed to the left of the storage unit to accommodate hanging items, such as coats, backpacks, and purses. The hooks would be installed onto wood planks and stained to match the cubby storage unit, creating a cohesive look.
In collaboration with the owners, we chose maple wood and a custom dark brown stain inspired by an existing wood piece in their home. The unit was initially constructed in our woodworking shop and finished and assembled on-site.
Once the installation was complete, the homeowners were thrilled with the function and beauty of this piece they helped design. Their busy household now has a smarter and harder working laundry-mudroom storage they can be proud to use and show off to guests.
