All Decked Out: A Long-Awaited Backyard Refresh

After years of living with a deck that had seen better days, our clients were ready to say goodbye. It was worn and weathered, the stairs were crooked and leaning, and the structure had reached the end of the road.

They wanted something that felt more like a true extension of their home—roomier, more functional, and better suited to how they spend their favorite warm-weather days: outside.

Laying the Groundwork for Better Outdoor Living

We partnered with licensed local contractors to handle the permitting, zoning, and drawings required by the local municipality, so everything was in place before construction began. Then we designed a larger layout to comfortably fit their new outdoor furniture and create a more open, usable space.

We recommended treated cedar-toned lumber for a warm, timeless look that will hold up beautifully to the elements. Horizontal-style railings add a modern edge while keeping the view open when seated. We also customized the railing width to give them a perch for their potted plants, which they care for and enjoy year-round.

One detail they were especially excited about was the sun shade sail. Rather than a clunky umbrella in the middle of everything, we extended the corner posts to support a removable shade sail. It gives them the coverage they need on sunny days and keeps the space clean and open the rest of the time, making the deck feel like an open-air extension of their living space.

After years of making do with a deck that no longer felt safe or functional, this backyard refresh was a long time coming. It took just two and a half days to go from tear-down to finished. And now, the deck feels just right for their needs—and it's safe, low-maintenance, and perfect for relaxing or gathering outdoors from sunup to sundown.
