Before & After: A Compact Home Office Makeover

Writer's picture: Oak & StoneOak & Stone

In a recent large-scale renovation project, shrinking the footprint of the home office allowed for a new powder room on the opposite wall. With the reduced space, optimizing every inch became crucial. Our goal was to enhance the office's functionality and visual appeal, and we're excited to share the transformation that turned a smaller space into a modern, inviting home workspace.

We implemented several thoughtful upgrades that contributed to this modern transformation.

Smart Storage

The first step was to tackle storage. We built a small closet as a sleek organizational hub for office supplies, the printer, and the home’s internet components, keeping these essentials hidden neatly yet easily accessible. We added custom shelving and baseboards in this small space, finishing with a fresh coat of paint to blend seamlessly with the room's new look.

Upgraded Entrance

Next, we addressed the entrance. To conserve space, we replaced the original double French doors with a single door, but we didn't compromise on style. The new door received a sophisticated makeover with Iron Ore paint, a deep charcoal hue, and we installed brushed brass hardware to elevate the look.

Functional and Stylish Feature Bookshelf

The centerpiece of the renovation was the new bookshelf, designed not only for storage but also as an attractive backdrop for virtual meetings. To install this feature without cutting into existing drywall, we placed four wood columns along the wall, enhancing them with molding for added architectural interest. Between these columns, we built and installed shelves crafted from natural red oak, providing plenty of space for books and keepsakes. Three LED picture light fixtures above each column illuminate displayed items and tie in with the brushed brass door hardware.

Fresh and Modern Finishing Touches

To round off the transformation, we painted the walls of this home office in Sherwin Williams’ Alabaster, a neutral and inviting shade that brightens the space. The window trims were painted with Iron Ore to match the door, creating a cohesive look, and accented with walnut-stained trim to introduce a warm and natural element that complements the red oak shelves.

With thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship, even small spaces can be transformed into functional and stylish surroundings. Despite the challenges of a reduced footprint, the new home office's enhanced usability and aesthetic appeal prove that less can indeed be more in modern home design and finishing.
