What started as a basic home office is now one of the most-loved rooms in this Mt. Horeb home. With retirement on the horizon, the homeowners were ready to reimagine their space—transforming it from a purely functional work zone into a den that could serve many purposes throughout the day.
A Shift in Purpose (and Mood)
The goal was clear: create a room that still functioned for work but also invited relaxation, reading, and even a little quiet entertainment. The homeowners chose Jasper by Sherwin Williams, a deep, dark green with earthy tones that instantly set a calming, grounded mood. Using a partial color-wash technique, we carried that color across the walls, baseboards, and doors, saturating the entire space to create an enveloping and intentional feeling.

Custom Built-Ins for Personal Touches
To make the most of the room, we designed and crafted a custom built-in unit around the homeowner's freestanding desk with cabinetry and bookshelves on either side. In the center, an open workspace offers plenty of room for a laptop or notebook, while shelves above display favorite books, mementos, or keepsakes. Beadboard backing adds texture and visual interest, all painted in Jasper for a seamless, elevated look.
Trim, Texture & a Little Brass
We added picture frame molding to the existing closet doors, turning a once-flat surface into something with depth and character. Brushed brass hardware on the cabinetry and doors brings warmth and a subtle contrast against the dark green. These thoughtful details—color, trim, and finishing materials—add depth and personality to the room.
A Place to Work and Unwind
As the homeowner puts it, what was once strictly a home office is now “a room you want to be in.” It’s still a place to get work done, but it now offers so much more.
“Really enjoying the new den. I work and then stay to read for several hours each day.”
The room has become a cozy retreat for reading, watching TV, and even playing a few rounds at the chess board that the homeowners added.
This project is a reminder that home updates don't just change how a room looks—they can transform how it feels and expand how it's used.
