Live edge wood captures the raw beauty of nature in design. The term 'live edge' refers to preserving the wood's natural edges, showcasing the tree's original contours. Unlike traditional lumber with straight, uniform edges, live edge pieces retain the natural lines, curves, and unique characteristics of the tree's outer layer. These pieces honor the wood's heritage and ensure that each piece is distinct, adding organic elegance and individuality to a space.
Where to Use Live Edge Wood
Live edge wood lends itself to many design applications, including:
Tabletops: A live edge table becomes the focal point of any dining room or office, bringing a slice of the outdoors inside.
Countertops and Bar Tops: Adding a live edge countertop or bar top can instantly elevate a kitchen or entertainment area with a unique, rustic flair.
Floating Vanities: A live edge floating vanity adds an unexpected, natural element to bathrooms, blending functionality with natural beauty.
Shelving: Floating live edge shelves offer a practical and aesthetically pleasing storage solution, perfect for displaying decor or books.
Furniture & Decor: From headboards to mantels, live edge wood can be incorporated into virtually any furniture or decor.
With its versatility, live edge wood can elevate any space, even a modern one. To illustrate, we’ll walk you through a project in which we embraced its unique charm to create a practical and stylish solution for a sophisticated powder room.
A Character-Filled Live Edge Floating Vanity
In this recent powder room makeover, we aimed for warmth and drama by incorporating a floating vanity crafted from a white oak live edge slab sourced from Madison's east side. Collaborating with The Wood Cycle, we brought this unique piece to life. Measuring 31.75 inches long and 16.25 inches deep, with a 2-inch thickness, The Wood Cycle expertly flattened and cut the slab to size for under $250.00. We sanded and finished it with a high-quality water-resistant coating to protect against moisture, preserving its beauty.
Finding the Perfect Live Edge Slab
Selecting the ideal live edge slab involves considering factors, such as the wood species, grain patterns, thickness, flatness, and the edge's aesthetic—which can range from linear to curvy. For our project, we sought a slab with a relatively straight edge and a distinctive white oak grain.
The Wood Cycle has vast selection with over 250 dry slabs and 500 more awaiting kiln drying. We chose a white oak slab that met our specifications and perfectly embodied the natural beauty we wanted in our modern design.
Live edge wood celebrates nature's unrefined beauty. Its timeless appeal can transform any space, whether you're adding a statement piece or searching for a unique piece for your next project. For more design inspiration, read more on our blog or visit our project portfolio.
